U.S. Mint Temporarily Suspends Silver Sales

Rapidly rising silver prices have created a dilemma for the U.S. Mint, which has suspended sales of all silver coins until it can reprice the products on its website.

All silver products are “temporarily unavailable” for purchase “until we update the website with new prices,” Bianca, a Mint sales representative, told me today when I inquired via a toll-free customer service telephone number.

The conundrum arose on Wednesday when the COMEX’s silver price breached $90 an ounce and rose as high as $93, which was above the $91 the Mint charged for uncirculated 1-ounce American Silver Eagles, Morgan Dollars, and Peace Dollars.

The price for 1-ounce American Silver Eagle, Morgan Dollars, and Peace Dollar proof coins was $95 before the sales suspension.

Today, the silver price closed above $92 an ounce.

All silver coins on the U.S. Mint website are labeled as “Not Available” or “Limited,” though customers can click on a “Remind Me” button to receive an email or text alert when the products become available.

The U.S. Mint has suspended silver sales before, but those suspensions were attributed to inventory shortages and supply chain disruptions, not to rising bullion prices.

Between 2008 and 2010, extreme demand forced the U.S. Mint to ration and temporarily suspend sales of American Silver Eagles several times due to a shortage of blanks to make the bullion coins. At the time, some industry observers attributed the shortages to kinks in the supply chain or a manufacturing bottleneck.

Strong demand and lack of inventory in 2020 also required the Mint to temporarily suspend sales of 1-ounce American Silver Eagles.
